The Krugerrand has been in production since 1967 and is widely considered the coin that launched the modern gold-bullion market. It contains exactly one troy ounce of gold in a 22-karat alloy (with copper, which gives it the characteristic rose tint). The obverse shows Paul Kruger, former president of the South African Republic; the reverse depicts a springbok antelope. No face value is stamped on the coin; its legal-tender status is derived from its gold content. Diameter is 32.77mm, total weight 33.93 grams. IRA-eligible.
