The Gold American Buffalo was introduced in 2006 as the first .9999 fine (24-karat) gold coin ever produced by the U.S. Mint. It uses James Earle Fraser's 1913 'Indian Head' nickel design: a composite Native American portrait on the obverse, an American bison on the reverse. The coin weighs 31.1035 grams, measures 32.7mm, and carries a $50 face value. Because it meets the .995+ purity threshold, it qualifies for precious-metals IRA accounts. The 24-karat composition makes it softer than the alloyed American Eagle, so it's often kept in protective capsules.
