The $20 Liberty Head Double Eagle was minted from 1849 to 1907 and is one of the most recognized pre-1933 U.S. gold coins. Each coin contains 0.9675 troy ounces of gold in a 90% gold / 10% copper alloy. The obverse features James B. Longacre's Lady Liberty wearing a coronet; the reverse shows a heraldic eagle with a shield. These were the largest-denomination gold coins produced for regular circulation by the U.S. Mint. Pre-1933 gold trades at a premium above its melt value due to age, scarcity, and collector demand. The 'BU' designation indicates the coin has been well-preserved with minimal handling.
